According to the Environmental Protection Agency, radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., only trailing behind smoking, and is responsible for roughly 21,000 deaths each year.

The gas comes as a result of the natural breakdown of uranium in the soil and can seep into buildings undetected. Currently, Illinois law only recommends radon testing in schools – it does not require it.

The EPA, Environmental Protection Agency, educates the country regarding the risks involved in being exposed to radon. EPA proclaims that this gas  is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, Studies show that only smoking kills more peole. Radon causes  about 21,000 deaths yearly.

The science behind the gas explains that radon is caused by natural uranium breakdown. This breakdown occurs in the soil and seep into and inside homes or interior spaces undetected.

Rhinelander Radon Mitigation: How Radon Affects on Native American Communities

You may have been educated that radon testing and radon mitigation can decrease lung cancer risk, but did you know that heritage plays a part as well? Many of our Native American communities are less likely to have knowledge concerning this lethal toxin. Many disparities prevent vulnerable people and communities from accessing information about lung cancer risk associated with radon gas. Now, universities are sounding the alarm in order to warn our communities that testing for radon needs to be considered.

A recent study performed by the University of Wisconsin and a Madison Cancer Center came together with the Native community in Wisconsin to instruct, educate, and offer free radon and mitigation services. This new effort by a cancer center to make a difference in Native American health and well-being is the beginning stage of protecting our cherished people from obtaining lung cancer. Radon Mitigation is the key to this effort. Minocqua Radon Mitigation offers any help that we can offer to help the less advantaged people in our community perform radon mitigation on their homes.

Of course, it is understood that not all people exposed to this gas will develop lung cancer, but there are no studies to determine which people will succomb to lung cancer and even death if elevated gases are not addressed with radon mitigation.

If more cancer centers take action and step up to the plate, we can play a vital role together in decreasing the ravage of lung cancer by addressing and assessing medical treatment directly pertaining to these cancer factors of risk in regard to having or not having radon mitigation.

    .

It is our hope that if more cancer centers get involved, together, we could all play a dramatic role in educating and assisting our vulnerable Native communities, lessening the homes' residents’ exposure to lung cancer by radon.

Facts as we know them according to EPA stats:

Approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year caused by radon

Radon is a radioactive gas that is exhausted from soil under homes, which continues to move into cracks in the concrete of the foundation. Studies show 1 in 15 U.S. homes have elevated radon levels, which are readings above 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L).

Radon mitigation can be costly and out of reach for many Native Americans.

Outdoor radon level measurement is about 0.4 pCi/L. Indoor areas are a typical 1.3 pCi/L using the United States as a whole. If home levels exceed 4. 0 pCi/L action should be taken to mitigate radon in that home. Rhinelander, WI homes should test for radon.

Oneida County Residents are urged to test their homes for radon.
